How a dummy knob works

Dummy door knobs are fixed, non-turning door knobs, mounted to one side or both sides of a door. A door with a dummy knob typically doesn't use a mechanical or magnetic lock; instead, it relies on a modern concealed magnetic latch (or an old-school ball catch). Dummy door knobs are typically installed on double closet doors, and French doors in both active/active and active/passive door leaf configurations.

How to install a dummy knob

The installation of a dummy knob, i.e. VERUM CHAM or VERUM SOAP, can be done in one of three ways:

  1. One side surface-mounted: Uses a threaded furniture insert nut (typically with an inner hex head)
  2. One side through hole-mounted: Uses a 1/2” (12 mm) through hole and a dummy door spindle
  3. Two sides through hole-mounted: Uses a 1/2” (12 mm) through hole, spindle connects two door knobs
